What types of child punishments are against the law? The answer is surprising.

There are many perspectives on the appropriate way to discipline children. But, in Canada, not all forms of child discipline are allowed. Using some forms of discipline can get parents, caregivers, or teachers into serious trouble. They can be sent to jail or a children’s aid society, or parents can have their children taken away because of how a child was punished. However, what child punishments are actually illegal may be different than people think. Some forms of corporal punishment are allowed, while other types of punishments are not.

In this edition of the Ontario Family Law Podcast, Certified Specialist in Family Law, John Schuman, explains what punishments for children are illegal in Canada, and which ones are not. He goes over the rules for corporal punishment. John also explains what punishments will cause a children’s aid society to open an investigation and, potentially, try to take the kids away and what punishments could lead to criminal charges.
